EARLY poll results of the 2014-2015 Auto Focus People’s Choice Awards (AFPCA) show new vehicles leading top-selling models and most of last year’s winners in the run for Model and Automobile of the Year honors in the Standard and Luxury categories.
According to AFPCA organizer Sunshine Television (STV), the only winner from last year that is holding up well in the Standard category is the Ford Explorer (Large SUV). In the Luxury category, only two from last year’s winners—the BMW X5 (Midsize SUV) and the Audi Q3 (Open Class)—have found their way on top of the standings this year.
And while the top two positions for the Automobile of the Year title are currently being held by the Hyundai Accent and Mazda 3 in the Standard category, and by the Lexus IS350 and Porsche Macan among luxury models, the race for the title is still unpredictable, STV said.
“We’re only a month into the online poll that began June 1 and which will end September 30,” said Gerry Aquino, AFPCA’s committee chairman. “If we go by the pattern of AFPCA polls over the last nine years, voting heats up midway through the three-month period.”
The AFPCA, held annually, is on its 10th year. It is headed by STV Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Ray Butch Gamboa.
STV said the AFPCA is the country’s only award system for the automotive industry that determines the winning models based on a unique selection process combining online public votes and unit sales. Voting and a real-time preview of the tally can be accessed at www.autofocus.com.ph.
Winners will be announced at an awards program on October 18.
