• Ayala-Puregold JV to open first QC supermarket


    PROPERTY developer Ayala Land Inc., (ALI) and retailer Puregold Price Club Inc. will launch the first branch of their joint-venture supermarket in Quezon City before the end of the month.

    Merkado Supermarket is a product of AyaGold Retailers Inc., a 50-50 joint venture between ALI Capital Corp. and Entenso Equities Inc., wholly owned subsidiaries of ALI and Puregold, respectively.

    The UP Town Center in Quezon City will house the first branch of Merkado Supermarket, which is scheduled to officially open on Friday, July 31.

    The new supermarket targets the middle-income segment and will cater mostly to working mothers aged from 25 to 40 years old.

    ALI vice president Cora Dizon explained that branching out into the supermarket industry is not only beneficial to the business aspect of ALI, but will also be a way of expanding the services that they offer to the communities that they have developed.

    “Merkado Supermarket plays a significant role in ALI’s business portfolio. Not only does this strengthen and expand our retailing business which started with our convenience and department stores joint ventures, but is also a testament to our commitment in delivering a holistic environment and experience to the mixed-use communities that we are developing,” she said.

    The supermarket will be a mall-based project, meaning, all of the Merkado branches will be located within existing Ayala Malls.

    Anthony Sy, AyaGold president, said that having a mall-based location will give the project
    wider access to attract customers since mall-goers will now have the convenience of retail shopping and grocery shopping in one location.

    “With the mall-based Merkado Supermarket, this will enable us to tap a broader market,” said Sy, adding that the location of their first branch will target the younger market.

    “In the case of UP Town Center, this could range from students to young professionals and young families,” he said.

    Merkado offers a wide array of products such as fresh grocery items, an extensive line of local and imported goods, and featured product lines from its own bakery and rotisserie.

    After the scheduled opening of the first branch on Friday, AyaGold plans to open about two more branches next year. It aims to open a total of eight branches in five years.
