The Philippine Azkals are ready to test their mettle against the mighty Uzbekistan squad in the 2018 World Cup qualification round match today at the Philippine Sports Stadium in Bulacan, according to team captain Phil Younghusband.

After winning convincingly against the lower ranked Maldives, 2-0, in a friendly match in Manila recently, the Azkals will now attempt to beat the mighty Uzbeks that are carrying a much higher FIFA ranking than the Philippines.

“We are prepared and we are ready. We know what Uzbekistan has to offer. We know that if we do our jobs right and perform well, we can pull an upset,” the skipper said during the prematch press conference on Monday.

Uzbekistan, ranked no.76 in the world, will be the toughest hurdle that the Filipino squad must overcome in the group stage of the competition.

Despite the superior ranking of their foes, Young¬husband said that he believes their training leading to the match is adequate for them to clinch a win.

“We know that they are 50 places ahead of us but coach [Thomas Dooley] prepared us in the right way and the best way possible.”
