The Philippine Azkals acquired a much needed confidence boost ahead of their crucial September 8 World Cup qualifier match against Uzbekistan after winning against Maldives on Thursday, according to team captain Phil Younghusband.
The Philippines thrashed the Maldives Red Snappers 2-0.
“For us, the important thing is to get a win and we are able to do that so it has given us confidence,” Younghusband said.
The new Azkals skipper added that they were put in a high-pressure situation ahead of the game because they were pitted against a lower-ranked team.
“This is a difficult game from the start because they are 50 places behind us and if we get a draw or lose, then it affects us,” Younghusband said.
He stressed that they are just glad to win and build up their confidence going into the important bout with Uzbekistan.
“We got the job done and we got a good result. We have every right to have confidence in the way we play. I think we have confidence going to that Uzbekistan game.”
