PHILIPPINE Football Federation (PFF) President Mariano Araneta announced on Friday that Thomas Dooley is the new head coach of the Philippine Azkals. Dooley came in time for the Azkals’ preparation for the Asian Football Confederation Challenge Cup in May.
The American-German Dooley, 52, is a former team captain in the United States.
Dooley saw action in the 1994 and 1998 World Cup. He will be honing the Azkals’ skills not only for the Challenge Cup in May but also for the Asean Football Federation Suzuki Cup in November. Dooley replaced Hans Michael Weiss, the last German coach of the Azkals. The Azkals will begin their training next week before playing a friendly game against the Malaysian squad in Kuala Lumpur.
“Dooley will start the preparation immediately for the team and we’re hoping for the best this year,” said Araneta, who is hoping to improve the Philippines’ third place finish in the 2012 Challenge Cup in Nepal.
The Philippines will compete in the Challenge Cup against Afghanistan, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Maldives, Myanmar, Palestine and Turkmenistan. The champion will secure a ticket to the prestigious 2015 Asian Cup.
