• Baby Falcons, NU advance in UAAP Jr basketball

    The Adamson University (AdU) Baby Falcons stunned the Far Eastern University (FEU) Baby Tamaraws, 78-65, in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 79 juniors’ basketball tournament at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan City on Tuesday.

    The Baby Falcons took control of the first quarter after igniting a 7-0 run from the efforts of Reygan Santos, Steven Carl Flores, and Florencio Serrano, 29-16.

    Rhon Abarrientos scored two long jumpers for FEU in the 1:44 minute mark of the second period, 42-38. Jack Gloria drove to the basket with 52.0 seconds left, 42-40. With Baby Falcon Evan Jose Agbong drawing a pushing foul, Kenji Roman split his free throws to cut Adamson’s lead to one, 42-41.

    Adamson broke away from FEU in the second half to notch their second victory in the season, 78-65.

    Gerry Austin Abadiano top scored for Adamson with 14 points, while Serrano and Santos had 13 markers apiece. Agbong added 12 more points for Adamson. Roman and Gloria recorded double-double outings for FEU with 12 points and 15 rebounds, and 12 markers and 13 boards, respectively.

    “It is important for us to be consistent in what we do because there were several times that what we did was off. But fortunately in the fourth quarter, we became consistent both in offense and defense,” said Adamson head coach Goldwyn Monteverde.

    In the second match, defending champions National University (NU) Bullpups beat the Ateneo de Manila High School (AHS) Blue Eaglets, 73-68.

    The Bullpups dominated under the basket with 45 rebounds and 34 inside points against Ateneo’s 39 boards and 30 inside points.

    Winderlich Coyoca led NU with 20 markers, followed by Karl Peñano with 16 more points. Rhayyan Amsali and John Clemente combined for 29 markers and 20 rebounds. Samjosef Belangel tallied 23 points for Ateneo, while Dave Ildefonso had 11 markers.

    Both carrying 2-0 win loss cards, the Adamson Baby Falcons and the NU Bullpups are now sharing the top spot.

    Meanwhile, the University of the Philippines Integrated School (UPIS) Juniors Maroons barged into the winning column after overpowering last season’s runner up De La Salle Santiago Zobel School (DLSZ) Junior Archers, 81-59.

    University of the East (UE) Junior Warriors also upset the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Tiger Cubs, 87-77.

    The FEU Baby Tamaraws, Ateneo Blue Eaglets, UPIS Junior Maroons, and UE Junior Warriors each hold a 1-1 card, while the La Salle Juniors Archers and UST Tigers Cubs remained winless for a 0-2 record.
