BAGUIO CITY: Mayor Mauricio Domogan is asking city council members to amend the “No Plastics” ordinance by adding biodegradable bags as alternative forms of packaging materials. Reports from a legislative tracking conducted recently on the implementation of the measure showed the use of paper bags may not be the best choice to replace plastic bags. He said use of biodegradable plastics and other alternative materials should also be considered. Passed in 2007, the ordinance states the use of biodegradable packing materials such as paper and buri in all supermarkets, groceries and related establishments. The ordinance aims to lessen and eradicate the use of plastic bags which is a major source of waste. The city government began the information campaign on the ordinance in 2011 and got mixed reactions from the public.
