SECOND seed Manuel Balce 3rd defeated Dale Estonillo of Cebu, 7-6 (7-5), 6-2, on Monday in the opening day of the first leg of Philippine Sports Commission (PSC)-Philippine Tennis Association (Philta) junior tennis championship in Laray, Consolacion, Cebu.
After an exchange of crisp forehand and backhand shots in the first set, the Manila-based Balce took advantage of Estonillo’s fatigue to post a 4-2 win in the second set.
“It was a tough fight in the first round but I saw him tired in the second so I took the opportunity,” said Balce, who advanced to the second round of the boys’ 16-under class.
Meanwhile, Hong Kong-based Noelle Vanasse Wilbert beat Josh Nicolas Abad, 6-2, 6-2, in the 10-under unisex division, Hardland Hogan outlasted Bernie Buanghug, 7-5, 6-4, in the boys’ 12-under class while James Abad whipped Kyle Calooy, 6-1, 6-4, also in the boys’ 12 under.
In the 16-under boys, Flame Sotto trounced Randolph Fernandez, 6-2,7-6(7-2), Francis Gener Lambayan ripped Heart Sotto, 6-0,6-0 while n the 18-under boys, Alley Berdin crushed Gerwhin Dwight Labiste, 6-1,6-1.
