Gilas Pilipinas mentor Tab Baldwin assured on Wednesday that 6’10 naturalized player Andray Blatche is committed to play for the national team this September in 2015 FIBA Asia Championship in Changsa, China.
Baldwin explained that the formation of the Philippine team would only start at the end of the ongoing Philippine Basketball Association Governors’ Cup, so all the teams could lend their players in the national pool.
“He (Blatche) is our naturalized player and it’s going to be great to see him play for us. He is committed to play although I don’t have a definite time of his arrival,” Baldwin told The Manila Times in a phone interview. “He is going to be there [for Gilas]and that’s for sure.”
A reliable insider from the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas also told The Manila Times that the former National Basketball Association power forward would most likely arrive and join Gilas Pilipinas before August 1 or even earlier.
Blatche, who represented the Philippines in the FIBA World Cup last year in Spain, is presently in the United States.
Baldwin is expecting a huge number of players in the professional league particularly in the national pool to come to Gilas’ first training session once the PBA Governors’ Cup is over.
“Once the Governors’ Cup is over, then I will announce the first training session,” he said. “So far, there is nothing I can say.”
