Jovanie Bualan of Yaw-Yan Fervilleon San Pablo, Laguna beat Raul Luba of Combat Power via arm bar one minute and 30 seconds into Round no.1 of the main event of the recent Balikatan Proving Ground mixed martial arts (MMA) tourney at the Hybrid Yaw-Yan Mixed Martial Arts Training Center, 5th floor Karen Building no. 9 Annapolis Street, Cubao, Quezon City.
Balikatan is the most active local tournament promoting the sport of MMA at grassroots level organized by veteran fighter and trainer Henry Yap Kobayashi.
Ezekiel Sanchez of Titans MMA San Fernando, Pampanga pulled off a rear naked choke to defeat Tammy Cruz of Team Biagtan Dasmariñas, Cavite one minute before the end of third round. The bout bags the Best Fight Award. Samson College MMA fighter Jomar Pal-iwen bagged the Knock Out of the Night Award when he floored Titans MMA fighter Francis Legaspi with a jumping round house kick to the head 19 seconds into the first round. Hybrid Yaw-Yan’s Jerwheel Baylon got the Best Submission Award when he beat Taniboy Belches of Star Valley Fitness Gym with an omoplata one minute and five seconds into Round 1. This is the first time a fighter won using an omoplata, a kind of shoulder lock, in Balikatan tournament.
In the lone women’s MMA match of the night, Hybrid Yaw-Yan’s Denese Cabanag won via unanimous decision over GARA MMA’s Cristina Saing.
In the other matches, Hybrid Yaw-Yan fighter Reggie Escosora won against Reydes Tuquero, when its corner throws a towel before third round begins, Samson College MMA’s John Kharlo Restoles beat Hybrid Yaw-Yan’s Alfredo Christian Eusebio via technical knock-out one minute and 30 seconds into Round no. 1, Famelo Tabanao of Samson College MMA won via TKO one minute and 15 seconds into Round no. 2 against Combat Power’s Jonas Sunico, Team De Tomas Fabricio MMA fighter Ariel Oliveros won via unanimous decision over Combat Power bet Ervin Elumba, while Willie Benedicto of Hybrid Yaw-Yan Lucena City beat Team PAMAA fighter Jefferson Grulla via Guillotine choke one minute and five seconds into Round 3.
