Edward Benosa is getting there.
That is, to prove to the music industry that he is not just a pretty face, but a gifted singer, who can hold his own even across Asia’s Nightingale Lani Misalucha in concert.
“That was such a huge boost to my career,” the 25-year-old half Spanish-half Filipino looker acknowledged, as he recalled his luck to be chosen as Misalucha’s guest artist for her Valentine’s concert, Love Catcher, at Resorts World Manila in February.
“To sing with her, I felt it all the way to my soul,” he added. “For a newcomer like me, to be able to sing with the best is a huge blessing kasi talagang mahahasa ka at pagbubutihan mo ang pagkanta.”
Just a little over a year in the music industry, Edward—whom the public first saw as a contestant in The Voice of the Philippines Season 1—also has an eponymous debut album under Star Records, which carries his first hit single “Di Man Lang Nagpaalam,” and a Best New Artist nomination FM radio station MOR’s Pinoy Music awards.
“We’re happy with how his career is going, and we’re careful with every step we take,” his manager composer and indie film actor Arnold Reyes shared with The Manila Times. “Believe it or not, it’s much harder to establish a career of someone as good looking as him in this industry. Pag nakita siya, ang iniisip nila agad, kasi guwapo lang, so he really has to work hard to make people listen and prove he has what it takes to record and to perform.”
Thanks to his well-received stint at Misalucha’s concert, both Edward and Arnold have found the confidence to mount his first solo concert. Slated shortly after his birthday on April 16 (Edward’s natal day is on April 7), the artist who is now dubbed the “Romantic Pop Balladeer” will strut more of his stuff at Teatrino in Greenhills.
The concert will be directed by Frank Lloyd Mamaril, with Marvin Querido as Musical Director. Edward’s special guests will be Morisette Amon and DJ Chacha of MOR 101.9.
“I’ll be performing a repertoire of mostly love songs, but I’ll also show that I can do other genres, especially rock, which I really want to get into,” Edward enthused. “Gusto ko parang Jon Bon Jovi ang dating so I can pull off a surprise for my audience that I can do more than just ballads.”
His director meanwhile promises “a very intimate show” that will also serve as a culmination and celebration of all the good things that have happened to Edward and his career in the past year.
“I’m nervous, but I’m ready to step into the spotlight,” said the ever positive, and ever-smiling newbie celebrity.
“He knows it’s a big challenge, but he’s taking it on because he knows that if he succeeds in pulling it off, it will be another major step forward in his career and his bid to be known as a legitimate, full-fledged pop artist,” added his manager.
Happily, there have been a lot of people who have been asking for Edward to have a concert of his own, so a good turn out is already expected this early.
“Now is the right time,” he declared. “That’s why we’ve decided on the title Most Requested. And ngayon pa lang, I can promise everyone that I’ll give the show everything I’ve got to show them I’m really where I should be.”
