Bank teller in SSS pension theft

CALAMBA CITY, Laguna: A teller of the Philippine National Bank (PNB) in Calamba Poblacion branch is facing charges for theft, qualified theft and forgery for allegedly withdrawing P42,000 from the account of a 71-year-old Social Security System (SSS) pensioner.

Supt. Sancho Celedio, officer-in-charge of Calamba City Police Station, identified the suspect as Sheila Varona, PNB new accounts clerk.

Celedio said SSS pensioner Salvador Gayos Aromin, of Barangay Looc of this city, complained that Varona withdrew his pension without his authority on August 31, October 3 and October 20, this year for a total of P42,000 as reflected in his account summary.

Bank manager Rey Unciano who verified the complaint confirmed that the withdrawals were made and released over the counter but the signature in each transaction was found to be different compared with those in the specimen card.

The alleged anomaly was discovered on December 15 which also revealed that Varona was the one who approved the withdrawals.
