Barako Bull aim to reclaim solo leadership

BARAKO Bull will attempt to regain solo leadership when it takes on equally dangerous Rain or Shine while sister teams San Miguel Beermen and Barangay Ginebra Kings collide today in the 40th Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Governor’s Cup elimination round at the Araneta Coliseum.

After four straight wins, the Energy Cola lost to the Beermen, 113-116, on Wednesday and coach Koy Banal wants his wards to bounce back strong when they face the Elasto Painters in their 3 p.m. encounter.

The Beermen, bearing a 2-3 win-loss slate, are seeking their fifth straight victory when they battle Ginebra at 5:15 p.m. Their most recent win was over the Elasto Painters, 93-81, in Dubai, United Arab Emirates on May 22.

Coach Yeng Guiao’s Rain or Shine, with a 1-3 card, are keen to get out of the ninth spot. The squad’s lone win was over Globalport, 119-112, also in Dubai on May 21.

To accomplish the task, Guiao is counting on 6’4 import Wendell McKines, who averages 26.5 points and 12.75 rebounds a game. Paul Lee is also expected to lead the Elasto Painters along with Raymond Almazan, Beau Belga, JR Quinahan, Ryan Arana and Gabe Norwood. They will collide head-on against Barako Bull’s 7’2 Lian McMorrow, who averages 26.4 points and 22.6 rebounds per game. Besides their hardworking Canadian import, coach Koy Banal will also lean on JC Intal and Joseph Yeo.

The 6’0 guard Yeo, a third overall pick by Coca-Cola in 2006 averages 15.2 points and 3.6 rebounds while the 6’4 Intal, a fourth overall pick by Air 21 in 2001 averages 14.8 points and 6.8 rebounds per game.
