The Barako Bull Energy Cola defeated the NLEX Road Warriors 101-96 in their first game in the 2015 Philippine Basketball Association Governor’s Cup on Wednesday at the Mall of Asia (MOA) Arena in Pasay city.
The 7-footer Canadian import played solid for Energy Cola finishing with 33 points and an impressive 22 rebounds in 42 minutes of play.
McMorrow got double-double digits in the first half scoring 19 points and 10 rebounds. Barako Bull went on a 12-2 scoring run in the second quarter where they led by as much as 22. Energy Cola launched a blitz in the paint, outscoring the Road Warriors 36-20 after two quarters. The Road Warriors went on a 17-9 scoring run cutting the lead to 14 at the end of the half.
Barako Bull outrebounded NLEX 62-43 including 22 offensive rebounds that led to 24 second chance points.
The Road Warriors caught fire in the third outscoring Barako Bull 28-14 behind 20 points from Michael Madanly. Barako Bull committed five turnovers allowing the Road Warriors to recapture the lead with two minutes remaining in the period, after lagging behind since the opening quarter. Energy Cola fought back in the last minutes to tie the contest at 70 by the end of the period.
Madanly was sidelined after a collision with two minutes left in the third period. He did not return for the rest of the game.
It was a tight contest in the fourth before JC Intal led a charge notching four three-pointers in the quarter. Barako Bull controlled the pace with five minutes left in the game. Intal finished the game with 24 points, 11 rebounds, and three assists. NLEX import Kwame Alexander posted double-double figures 16 points, 10 rebounds, and 4 blocks, but committed five personal turnovers.
Barako Bull will be facing the Blackwater Elite on Sunday, while NLEX will face defending Governor’s Cup champions Purefoods Star Hotshots on Saturday.
