Chico Lanete delivered when it mattered most powering Barako Bull’s 91-85 victory over Northern Luzon Expressway (NLEX) in the 40th Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Commissioner’s Cup on Tuesday at the Araneta Coliseum. Barako Bull is still in contention for a playoff spot.
The combo guard Lanete, who finished with 13 points, notched a back-to-back triple to give the Energy Colas an 89-85 lead with only 1:28 remaining in the game. His teammate Paolo Hubalde’s jumper stretched the lead to six with less than a minute to go.
NLEX failed to score from the three-point area in the remaining seconds.
“Chico is a veteran you can rely on down the stretch,” said Barako Bull head coach Koy Banal. “The desire is the starting point of every achievement. I’m glad everybody stepped up.”
Import Solomon Alabi posted 29 points and 15 rebounds while guard Solomon Mercado added 12 points, Kyle Pascual 10 points and JC Intal another 10 points for the Energy Colas that improved their win-loss record to 5-6.
Al Thornton and Mac Cardona finished with 24 points and 15 points respectively for NLEX.
NLEX’s five-game winning streak was halted and its win-loss record dropped to 6-5.
