Second seed Karl Baran bashed Carlo Placencia, 6-1, 6-3, to enter the quarterfinals of 2013 Philippine Sports Commission-Philippine Tennis Association Visayas Junior Tennis Championship on Saturday at the Montevista tennis courts in Bacolod City.
Baran relied on strong backhand plays in both sets to barge into the quarterfinals of boys’ 14-under singles class and meet Jerome Gavitoya, who won via a walkover against Edyrc Binuya.
Reynan Mahusay also advanced into the quarterfinals after beating Rolando Preston, 6-2, 6-1. Mahusay will face Joshua Martin Saravia, who defeated Enrico Gonzaga in the second round.
The third leg of the junior tennis competition in Bacolod City, which drew 125 participants all over the Visayas region, is organized by Philta Vice President Juanito Cansino Jr. and supported by the PSC and Bacolod City Mayor Monico Puentevella.
In the girls’ 14-under class, Erika Sevilla trounced Tracy Llamas, 6-1, 6-3, to clinch a quarterfinal spot. Sevilla takes on Keziah Mae Miranda, who outlasted Cheska Ynson, 4-6, 6-2, 10-4.
Amor Decendario ripped Valerie Desoyo, 6-1, 6-0, to face Yashe Mae Rivera in the girls’ 14-under quarterfinals stage. Rivera won via a walkover against Nicole Tiangson.
