BACNOTAN, La Union: A barangay captain who attended a Liga ng Barangay meeting was shot dead by a still unidentified gunman, in front of the legislative building of the municipal hall. Bacnotan Police Director Police Chief Insp. Fredilex Marron, identified the victim as Robert Cariaso, village chairman of Sta. Rita, here. He suffered multiple gunshot wounds in the body. It will be remembered that in the series of shootings in this town for the past two years, the most celebrated cases were the killing of Liga ng Barangay presidents Onofre Almojuela of Barangay Mabanengbeng and Edwin Cua, of Zaragosa. Other barangay officials killed were chairman Thelma Bocalbos of Barangay Calautit in October 2011, and Felix Henry Dacumos, barangay chairman of Bacsil, and Eulogia Arellano of Barangay San Martin. Cariaso’s shooting came after another barangay captain of the neighboring town of San Juan, was also shot but survived. Police said that the victim, Barangay Sto. Rosario chairman Arjel Macato, who was shot near a bridge by still unknown assailants, is recuperating in a local hospital. The motives of the two latest cases are still being probed.
