Barriga emerges No.2 light flyweight in World Series


London Olympian Mark Anthony Barriga is currently ranked second in the light flyweight division of the World Series of Boxing.

Barriga, who represents Italia Thunder, has 447 points on three straight wins in the semi-professional league organized by the International Boxing Association (AIBA).

The 20-year-old Panabo City native debuted with a sterling victory over Leandro Blanc of Argentina in January the followed it up with another impressive win against Ovidiu Berceanu of Germany in February. His recent win was against Lu Bin of China.

Cuban Yosbany Veitia of Cuba Domadores took the top spot with 737 points on a perfect 5-0 card while Kazakh Marden Berikbayev of Astana Arlans Kazakhstan wound up third with 431 on two wins and one loss.

Italia Thunder is leading the Group A ranking with 23 points on 8-1 win-loss record followed by Ukraine Otamans (22 points), Team Germany (12 points), USA Knockouts (11 points), Argentina Condors (nine points) and Algeria Desert Hawks (seven points).

Cuba Domadores (27 points), Astana Arlans Kazakhstan (22 points), Azerbaijan Baku Fires (18 points), Russian Boxing Team (17 points), Mexico Guerreros (seven points) and Hussars Poland (four points) comprised the Group B teams.

After the elimination round, the top four teams in each group will advance to the quarterfinals scheduled on March 28 and April 4.
