• Basilan copies best practices

COTABATO CITY: The Department of Education—Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (DepEd-ARMM) recently brought 3 municipal mayors, 31 barangay chairmen and 23 school principals from Basilan province on an educational tour in Malungon town, Sarangani province to learn from the community, business, local government and DepEd drive   to improve the academic performance of students.

Lawyer Jamar Kulayan, ARMM education secretary, said they wanted to replicate the best practices in education being done in Malungon.

Malungon students have consistently topped the National Achievement Test (NAT) in Region 12 for two consecutive years.

Kulayan said the performance of students in Malungon improved after school officials started working with local officials and community leaders in addressing the education-related problems in their localities.

In Barangay Malandag, one of the communities visited by the ARMM delegation, it was found that the community leaders helped in repairing classrooms, acquiring additional learning materials and building access roads to schools. The barangay officers also allotted funds from the internal revenue allotment (IRA) for education purposes.

The local business community was actively supporting the initiative to better the education opportunities for the Malandag children.
