Baste swimmers bag President’s Trophy

San Sebastian College-Recoletos tankers Mhikcoloe Dominique Abina and Hannah Drelyn Sanchez bagged the President’s Trophy awards after scoring highest FINA points in the 106th Philippine Swimming League (PSL) National Series – 10th Sen. Nikki Coseteng Swimming Championships held at the Diliman Preparatory School swimming pool in Quezon City.

Abina, a veteran of 2015 Summer World University Games in South Korea, got 591 points when he topped the boys’ 15-over 50m freestyle in 24.18 seconds, beating Jerard Dominic Jacinto of University of the East (576) and Sean Terence Zamora of University of Santo Tomas (543).

For her part, Sanchez earned 522 points in ruling the girls’ 12-year 50m freestyle in 28.85 seconds. National Collegiate Atletic Association record holder Andrea Jheremy Pacheco of College of Saint Benilde had 492 points for second while Kyla Soguilon of Aklan wound up third with 487 points.

Abina and Suarez pocketed P1,500 each.


“Having the FINA event is one good venue to push these kids to the limit. A lot of them now are aiming to win the President’s Trophy. And we’re happy that they are really improving,” said PSL President Susan Papa.

San Sebastian also claimed the overall championship crown with 569 points while Aquaspeed Sailfish settled for second (461) and Susan Papa Swim Academy finished third (446).

Diliman Preparatory School placed fourth (439) followed by Ichthus Swim Team (421), Mount Alban Legends (403), Ebenezer Swimming Club (354), Marikina Aquabears (281), Joey Andaya Seagulls (273) and Golden Seacow (264).

Thirteen new records were established including four from Aishel Cid Evangelista (boys’ 6-under 100m IM, 50m backstroke, 50m breaststroke and 50m freestyle) and three from Richelle Callera (girls’ 6-under 100m IM, 50m butterfly and 50m freestyle).

Abina (50m freestyle and 50m butterfly), Jacinto (100m IM and 50m backstroke) and Aubrey Tom (girls’ 9-year 100m IM and 50m freestyle) nailed two each while Sanchez (50m freestyle) and Soguilon (100m IM) got one apiece.
