STORM warning signal 1 has been raised for the northern part of Luzon as the low pressure area (LPA) in northeast of Itbayat town, Batanes province entered Philippine jurisdiction and developed into a tropical depression named Maring, the weather bureau reported on Saturday.
Maring, was the third cyclone for this month and 13th to enter the country this year.
Weather Forecaster Aldczar Aurelio said that as of 4 a.m., tropical depression Maring was located at 230 km Northeast of Itbayat, Batanes packing maximum sustained winds of 55 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center.
Aurelio said that public storm signal number 1, carrying winds of 45-60 kph, has been hoisted over the Batanes Group of Islands.
He added that Maring is not expected to make landfall in any part of country.
He said that Maring is forecast to move east at seven kph moving towards southern Japan.
Amid the distance of the howler from land, the cyclone is expected to strengthen the southwest monsoon, which will bring light to moderate rain showers and thunderstorms over the western section of Northern and Central Luzon, Aurelio said.
He added the regions of Ilocos, Cordillera, Cagayan Valley, Caraga, and Northern Mindanao will experience cloudy skies with moderate to occasionally heavy rain showers and thunderstorms which may trigger flashfloods and landslides.
The weather agency is advising residents in these areas to take all the necessary precautionary measures.
Aurelio said the rest of the country including Metro Manila will be partly cloudy to cloudy with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms.
Pagasa said that Maring also bears moderate to heavy rainfall 5-10 millimeters per hour) within its 200-kilometer diameter of tropical depression.
Pagasa said Maring is predicted to be at 390 km Northwest of Itbayat, Batanes, by Sunday morning and at 560 km Northwest of Itbayat, Batanes by Monday morning. By Tuesday morning it expected to be at 790 km Northwest of Itbayat, Batanes.
Meanwhile, Aurelio said the other LPA also spotted in Batanes is already out of the Philippine Area of Responsibility.
In its advisory, Pagasa said that Batanes group of islands will have rains and gusty winds with moderate to rough seas.
It added that moderate to strong winds blowing from the southwest will prevail over the rest of Luzon and the coastal waters along this area will be moderate to rough.
Elsewhere, winds will be light to moderate coming from the southwest with slight to moderate seas. PNA
