The Philippine under-16 national basketball team started their campaign in the FIBA Asia U16 Championship with a 98-58 win against Bahrain at the BritAma Arena, Jakarta, Indonesia on Thursday.
Batang Gilas dominated the Bahrainis 22-13 after the first quarter with Sean Ildefonso leading the charge.
Before halftime, the Filipinos managed to extend their lead to a sizeable amount 55-26 via Gerardo Gomez De Liano’s 10 points and four rebounds.
It went downhill for the Bahrainis as Batang Gilas continued to dominate the remaining two cantos to seal their first win in Group C.
Ildefonso finished with 16 points and six rebounds while Gomez De Liano added 15 markers and six boards for the Philippines.
The duo of Raphael Tibayan and Robert Mamuyac combined for a total of 24 points also for Batang Gilas.
The Philippines will face Thailand today for their second and last game in the group stage of the contest.
