The Philippine under-16 national basketball team emerged on top of Group C after beating Thailand, 70-51 in the preliminary round of the FIBA Asia U16 Championship, at the BritAma Arena in Jakarta, Indonesia on Friday evening.
Batang Gilas will next see action in the quarterfinals on November 5 against the number two seed from Group B, which houses Chinese Taipei, Lebanon, Bangladesh and host Indonesia.
Batang Gilas relied on a 10-0 run in the second quarter to vanish the Thais’ seven-point advantage and grabbed the lead 30-27.
The Filipinos further stretched their lead to 58-36 following a steady defensive performance limiting the Thais’ scoring to mere nine points.
In the final canto, the Thais managed to outscore the Filipinos, 12-15, but not enough to stop Batang Gilas from winning. Thailand finished last in Group C.
Samjosef Belangel and Kris Pagsanjan each finished with 10 points while young center Will Allen Gozum notched eight markers and 10 rebounds for the Philippines.
