The Philippine under-16 national basketball team beat Lebanon, 89-74, to finish fifth in the 2015 FIBA Asia U16 Championship at the BritAma Arena in Jakarta, Indonesia on Saturday.
Batang Gilas immediately took the lead 17-14 in the opening period of the consolation round. The Philippines notched 33 points in the second quarter to beef up their lead to 16 points, 50-34, going into the break.
Lebanon managed to outscore the Philippines, 19-22, late in the match but fell short of grabbing the lead.
Jason Tibayan led the Batang Gilas with 16 points, Kris Pagsabjan finished with 13 points, Samjosef Belangel had 13 points, eight rebounds and sevens assists while Sean Ildefonso and Giana Mamuyac contributed 12 and 10 points, respectively.
Despite an impressive run in the elimination round of the competition with four wins and a loss, the Philippines were unable to secure a semifinals berth after bowing to Japan, 73-66, in the quarterfinals.
Before going into the quarterfinals, the Batang Gilas managed to end the winning streak of three-time champion China with a 78-72 win in the second round of eliminations.
