Batang Pier blasts Rain or Shine in Albay

Terrence Romeo and Anthony Jay Washington joined forces to lead GlobalPort to a 101-99 triumph over Rain or Shine on Saturday in the Philippine Basketball Association Season 41 Governors’ Cup at the Ibalong Centrum for Recreation gym in Legazpi City, Albay.

Romeo scored 33 points, including crucial three-pointer and a basket in the fourth period, on top of five assists and two steals. Washington contributed 11 points that include the crucial shot that gave his team a 100-99 lead with still 27.1 ticks left in the game.

Yousef Taha, though finishing with mere seven points and seven rebounds, gave GlobalPort a 101-99 advantage after splitting his two free throws with only 3.4 seconds remaining in the game. Prior to Washington’s shot, Taha scored a basket that provided the Batang Pier a 98-97 edge with 1:08 left in the match.

Beau Belga posted 17 points, Mike Glover 18 points plus 11 rebounds and four assists, while playmaker Stanley Pringle had 16 points.

The Batang Pier’s win-loss record improved to 3-4.

Import Dior Lowhorn led Rain or Shine with 21 points and eight rebounds. The Elasto Painters’ win-loss record dropped to 3-4.

GlobalPort displayed cohesiveness in the early part of the game erecting a 13-6 lead behind Romeo’s basket.

Rain or Shine managed to tie the game at 23-all but the Elasto Painters reclaimed the lead at the end of the first period, 28-25. Rain or Shine again gained the upper hand, 54-48, at halftime behind the big effort of Belga and Lowhorn. Belga already scored 11 points at halftime while Lowhorn had nine points.

Rain or Shine took the lead again 81-76, after the third period but GlobalPort’s never-say-die attitude allowed them to outplay the Elasto Painters in the fourth quarter.

Meanwhile, the Barangay Gine­bra Gin Kings aim to grab a share of the second spot occupied by the Mahindra Enforcers when they battle the Star Hotshots today in the 6:45 p.m. second game while the Alaska Aces will face the Blackwater Elite in the first game at 4:30 p.m. at the Araneta Coliseum.
