Over 11,000 promising young athletes will be vying for honors in the 2016 Batang Pinoy National Championships which will kick off today in Tagum City, Davao del Norte.
With 267 local government units (LGU) involved, this year’s edition of the multisporting event will cater to 26 sports disciplines and over 600 events.
Among the sports that will be featured this year are archery, arnis, athletics, badminton, baseball, basketball (3-on-3), boxing, chess, cycling, dancesport, gymnastics, judo, karatedo, lawn tennis, pecak silat, rugby, sepak takraw, softball, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, triathlon, volleyball, weightlifting, wresting, and wushu.
However, the gymnastics and wushu events will be played on later dates in Manila.
Gymnastics will be on December 4 to 11 at the Rizal Memorial Gymnastics Hall in Manila City while Wushu will be played on December 5 to 8 at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City.
“This is going to be so much exciting. We hope that all the kids will enjoy despite the tight races,” said Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) commissioner Celia Kiram in an interview on Saturday.
Kiram said that this event will serve as an avenue to select athletes for future international tournaments including the Children of Asia Games, Asian Youth Games and Youth Olympic Games.
The PSC will also allot P3,000 as a stipend to a maximum 75 players per LGU.
“We are much excited to witness how things will unfold this time. We are hoping for the success of this year’s Batang Pinoy,” Kiram concluded.
