Batangas councilor killed in ambush

STO. TOMAS, Batangas: A town councilor and brother of a former News People’s Army (NPA) commander was killed in an ambush on Friday morning while jogging in Barangay San Pablo here.

Police Supt. Noel Sanchez, Santo Tomas Police chief, identified the victim as Domasino “Caloy” Mabilangan Jr., 51, of Valle Pio Subdivision.

The report said Mabilangan was jogging along the national highway in Barangay San Pablo when the suspect gunned him down near their subdivision, about 6.30 a.m.

He died on the spot from gunshot wounds in the body. He suspect fled to an unknown direction.

Police are looking at land dispute as one of the motives of the killing as the victim has received death threats during his incumbency as president of the farmers’ association.

They added that they are also considering a political angle as Mabilangan is seeking re-election with incumbent Mayor Edna Sanchez under the Nationalista Party in the May 2016 elections.

Mabilangan is the younger brother of Leopoldo “Ka Hector” Mabilangan of the NPA – Banahaw Command based in Quezon. Ka Hector was reportedly killed by his former comrades after he surrendered to the government in 1994.
