BATANGAS: An incumbent barangay chairman and his wife were killed while two others including a former barangay councilor were hurt when a grenade exploded inside their vehicle in Laurel town Friday evening.
Batangas police director Senior Supt. Omega Jireh Fidel identified the fatalities as Chairman Nestor Rodriguez of Brgy. Buso-buso and his wife Eusebia.
Fidel said Rodriguez died while being treated at Mercado Hospital in Tanauan Citywhile his wife died a few hours later from shrapnel wounds in their bodies.
Their companions, former barangay councilor and acting tanod chief Jaime Sarmiento and businessman Maximo Sarmiento are being treated at the same hospital for multiple wounds.
According to the police, the victims had just come from the house of Laurel town mayor Randy James Amo in Brgy. Gulod to attend an occasion and were about to leave in an L-200 pick-up (DSZ-276) when their vehicle suddenly exploded around 11:15 pm.
Laurel police chief Senior Insp. Ireneo Bajado said the victims were rushed to Laurel Memorial Hospital but were later transferred to Mercado Hospital in Tanauan City .
Bajado said they are now looking at politics and business rivalry as possible motives in the bombing incident.
Initial investigation of the explosive and ordnance division revealed that the explosive used could be a fragmentation grenade based on the evidence gathered at the crime scene.
Police however are still clue–less on the suspect’s identity or the group affiliation of the perpetrators responsible for the bombing.
