Filipino boxer Ian Clark Bautista lost to two-time Olympian Jose Kelvin Linares of Spain 28-29, in the 2016 Amateur International Boxing Association World Championship Olympic Qualifying tournament at the Sarhadchi Stadium in Baku, Azerbaijan on Friday.
“It was very unfortunate that Ian [Bautista] faced a much experienced two-time Olympian opponent and we’re hoping Felix [Marcial] will win his fights [in the tournament]. Let’s hope for the best,” Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines President Ricky Vargas told The Manila Times.
Marcial, who is seeded No.1 in his division, is set to fight German Under-21 national champion Abbas Baraou who knocked out his opponent from New Zealand during the first day of the competition. Marcial needed at least three victories to get an Olympics berth.
Filipino boxers light flyweight Rogen Ladon of Negros Occidental and lightweight Charly Suarez of Davao have already qualified for the Olympics after reaching the finals of Asia/Oceania Olympic qualifying tournament in China last April.
The two are presently undergoing a two-month training camp in Las Vegas.
