President Benigno Aquino 3rd on Monday urged Filipinos to be truthful and compassionate and reflect on the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus Christ this Lenten season.
In his Holy Week message, the President said Filipinos should follow the example of Jesus Christ by being humble and ready to sacrifice for others.
“Isipin po ninyo: Sa kabila ng lubos na kapangyarihang iligtas ang sarili sa kapahamakan, pinili ni Hesukristong magpakumbaba bilang tao, at ialay ang sariling buhay. Pinasan niya ang matinding kalbaryo upang maging bukal ng kaligtasan, at ilapit tayo sa Kaharian ng Diyos Ama (Think about it: Even if he had the power to save himself, Jesus chose to be humble and he offered himself as a sacrifice. He carried his calvary to be our savior and bring us closer to God),” Aquino said.
The president added that the love of Jesus Christ should inspire the people to make their own sacrifices for the good of the nation.
He said Christ’s humility and sacrifice serve as his guide in governance.
The president had lately been receiving stinging criticisms that he is trying to clear himself of any liability in the Mamasapano tragedy by heaping all the blame on relieved Special Action Force (SAF) commander Getulio Napeñas and resigned Philippine National Police chief Alan Purisima.
Aquino had insisted that he was fed the wrong information by the two police officials, preventing him to immediately help the police troopers slain on January 25.
The Senate report held Aquino responsible for the operation that left 44 police commandos dead.
The president challenged Filipinos to be truthful and compassionate.
“Ang hamon nga sa atin bilang mga tagasunod ni Hesukristo: Tumotoo tayo hindi lang sa salita, kung hindi sa gawa, (The challenge to Christ;s followers is this: Let us be truthful not just in words but also in deed),” he said.
