Beda busts EAC in NCAA junior basketball

Reigning seven-peat titlist San Beda College overwhelmed Emilio Aguinaldo College, 107-60, to remain undefeated and on top of the juniors division of the National Collegiate Athletic Association Season 92 junior basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City on Monday.

Sam Abu Hijle led San Beda’s onslaught with 17 points and 13 rebounds while Joshua Tagala had 14 points and 10 boards. It was the Cubs’ third win in a row while keeping their hold of the lead.

Germy Mahinay and Ry dela Rosa also posted double figures with 14 and 12 points, respectively.

“We just want to come out aggressive and finish strong,” said San Beda coach JB Sison, who is hoping to steer San Beda to a record eight straight crowns.

The Brigadiers absorbed their third straight loss.

In the other match, Mapua outclassed San Sebastian College-Recoletos, 101-45, for their third straight triumph.

Jasper Selanga, Romuel Junsay and Bryan Samudyo each notched 15 points while Sherwin Concepcion and Charles Dagta chipped in 13 and 10, respectively, for the Robins.

Mapua is hoping to bounce back from its painful experience last year when it finished No. 2 after the eliminations. Mapua was then ambushed by No. 3 Arellano University in the stepladder semifinals to set up a title duel with eventual champion San Beda.

“Hopefully we’ll finish better this season,” said Mapua coach Randy Alcantara.

The Staglets slid to the bottom with four straight defeats.
