Beermen eye 20th PBA crown today

THE San Miguel Beermen will aim for their 20th title when they battle the Alaska Aces today in Game Six of the best-of-seven titular series of the 40th Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Philippine Cup at the Araneta Coliseum.

Coach Leo Austria’s Beermen is now leading the series, 3-2 following their 93-88 triumph in Game Five on Friday. They need only to win today’s battle at 7:30 p.m. to secure their fifth All-Filipino title since joining the league in 1975. They last won a Philippine Cup crown in 2001.

Austria is seeking for his first title as a coach in the professional league.

June Mar Fajardo and Arwind Santos combined for 38 points and 10 blocks shots allowing the Beermen to survive the Aces the other day. The win is their first back-to-back victory over the Aces in the conference after an 88-70 triumph in Game Four. They also won Game Two (100-86) but lost Game One via overtime (82-88) and Game Three (70-78).

“I think we have been doing good things pretty much. San Miguel is really a Goliath; we are hoping to be David. If we keep on attacking their defense and play with the same kind of intensity, I think we can give ourselves a chance in Game 6,” said Alaska coach Alex Compton. Compton hopes JC Casio would deliver in the game. He finished scoreless in Game Four contributing to Alaska’s back-to-back setbacks.
