SPEAKER Feliciano Belmonte Jr. has taken to task Vice President Jejomar Binay for linking two buildings in the House of Representatives to the allegedly overpriced P2-billion Makati City Hall Building 2.
Belmonte was referring to Binay noting in a recent speech that Mitra building and North Lounge extension of the House of Representatives were built by the same contractor that constructed Building 2: Hilmarc’s Construction Corp.
He pointed out that offices of lawmakers housed by the Mitra building are a each equipped with bathrooms.
The North Lounge extension is being used by the House Secretariat and the Office of the Speaker.
The Mitra building is “not a garage. Let’s face it. Ha, ha, ha. With all [those]facilities, conference room, the narra paneling. . . good materials were used. We cannot compare these [with Building 2 that is used for parking]. Tomorrow you can all go there and take a look,” Belmonte told reporters.
He said he was not supposed to respond to Binay’s tirades out of respect but that House Minority Leader Ronaldo Zamora has urged him to reply in the spirit of fairness.
“You know how these structures [Mitra building and North Lounge extension] look like, and they are nice and decent. They are not for parking. They are office buildings with bathrooms. You can judge for yourself,” Belmonte, vice chairman of the ruling Liberal Party, added.
“From a workmanship point of view, the offices are okay. But if you talk about a garage, that’s a different story,” the Speaker said.
