Benefit show for the Filipino ‘Prince of Haute Couture’

A timeless creation by Aureo Alonzo

Close friends and colleagues have come together to organize a red-carpet fashion event for Aureo Alonzo, the Philippines’ “Prince of Haute Couture.” The benefit fashion show happens tonight at the Hyatt Regency Hotel and Casino in Manila.

Known as “Tatang” to his peers and to industry insiders, Alonzo is said to be holding his last show before he goes on full retirement. At 85, the celebrated fashion designer is undergoing dialysis treatments twice a week—the reason why Jojo Villafor and Tente Wilwayco spearheaded the upcoming event.

Not only will the retrospective fashion show raise funds for the designer’s medical expenses, it also celebrates the Tatang’s achievement in the local and international fashion industry.

Four segments are to be featured in the show starting off with 10 to 15 of Alonzo’s favorite clients modeling gowns he created for them. The second will include collections from his former apprentices and colleagues, including Wilwayco, Rey Lazaro, Dennis Martin, Pencil Diestra who each feature seven gowns.

He will then showcase his Camel Award collection to be modeled by veteran models like Suyen Chi and Marilen Espino. The night will cap off with a bridal gown by Alonzo to be worn by Marina Benipayo.

Also included in the event is an exhibit of Alonzo’s memorabilia of photos and fashion creations, which will be auctioned off at the ballroom foyer.

An advocate of personal style, Alonzo was once quoted in saying, “It is not what you wear, but how you wear it.”
