LA TRINIDAD, Benguet: The provincial government of Benguet is fast tracking capabilities in its disaster preparedness program with a series of training for Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (DRRMC) members and concerned groups. The latest was on the early warning and communication systems and protocol. The disaster preparedness capability program is a partnership between the provincial government and the World Food Program facilitated by the Jaime V. Ongpin Foundation, Inc. (JVOFI). Gov. Nestor Fongwan stressed the importance of communications facilities in generating information and feedback particularly among the various towns in immediately responding to respective concerns. He said there are still towns that lack communication facilities and there is no way of contacting them in disaster operations based on past experiences but that they will all be eventually equipped. Carlo Racelis, a consultant and expert on disaster preparedness program, discussed details of the emergency communications plan that sets goals and priorities in addressing gaps in emergency communication situations including recommendations to improve emergency communications capabilities.
