Benguet to give awards to leaders of cooperatives

LA TRINIDAD, Benguet: The Cooperative Development Authority (CDA) has given due recognition to leading cooperatives (coop) and leaders of coops in the province through the annual Gawad Parangal Search for Outstanding Coop.

CDA-Cordillera Regional Director Franco Bawang Jr. said that the award was given to coops with exceptional performance and coop leaders who have contributed to economic development.

Among the criteria for coops were organizational development and management, financial management and business operation, social relevance, and awards and recognition received. Meanwhile, the criteria for coop leaders include performance and contribution to coop development, award and citations received for the last five years, and longevity of service to coops.

Coop nominees were categorized based on net worth pursuant to the Magna Carta for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs). Micro enterprises should have not more than P3 million; for small enterprises, between P3 million and P15 million; medium enterprises, between P15 million and P100 million; and for large enterprises, more than P100 million.

Meanwhile, the results of the evaluation and assessment of nominees to the 2013 Gawad Parangal Awards under the different categories are as follows: Philex Mining Community Credit Coop for large enterprises; Benguet State University Multi-Purpose Coop (MPC) for the medium enterprise; Thanksgiving MPC for small enterprise; and Immaculate Conception Community MPC for micro enterprise.

Miguel Luma-ang, a coop advocate who currently chairs the Coop Bank of Benguet, Inc and Manager of the Buyagan Operators and Drivers Association MPC, was adjudged as coop leader for the province.

The ad hoc committee chaired by the CDA with members from the Benguet Provincial Coop Development Council recommended the endorsement of Luma-ang to the regional level competitions.

Unfortunately, the coops were not able to meet regional level endorsement, as they have not garnered the required accumulated points based on the criteria set by the CDA.

Bawang added that recognition would be given in rites during the celebration of coop month in October.

The CDA has been recognizing outstanding coops and coop leaders for two years to promote coope-rativism among communities.
