LA TRINIDAD, Benguet: Municipal officials of Itogon town, Benguet province are seeking funds for post harvest facilities for coffee processing under the Department of Trade and Industry’s (DTI) shared service facility. Seeing potential areas for expansion and the increasing demand for coffee products, the Itogon municipal council recently passed a measure requesting the DTI to provide financial assistance for the acquisition of post harvest facilities and equipment. The local government also crafted a proposal to formalize their request with the agency. Itogon Resolution 022 series 2014 supports the town’s coffee industry development project. The municipality’s coffee growers identified the need of procuring post harvest support facilities to develop the town’s coffee industry. Almost five percent of total coffee production is not harvested due to the absence of post harvest facilities. Growers still use the conventional mortar and pestle to dehull coffee beans or sell unhulled coffee beans at a lower price. The absence of much-needed dehuller equipment is critical in meeting the market demand. The provincial board endorsed the Itogon resolution for DTI’s favorable consideration.
