College of St. Benilde (CSB) and San Beda College (SBC) ruled the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) table tennis tournament on Sunday at the Colegio de San Juan de Letran (CSJL) Gym in Manila.
The CSB Blazers blanked the second seed Letran Knights, 3-0, to clinch their third consecutive title.
Serknight Benoya drew the first blood against William Mañago in the first singles match, 11-9, 11-6, 12-10.
Ryan Jacolo easily dispatched Jehtro Gapas in straight sets, 11-8, 11-8, 11-7. CSB’s duo Yuta Tortosa and Koby Cabrido finished off John Gonzales and Benjecer Lim, 11-8, 12-10, 8-11, 11-6.
The Letran Knights bagged the runner-up honors followed by University of Perpetual Help System-Dalta (UPHSD) Altas, and Arellano University (AU) Chiefs.
In the women’s play, the San Beda Red Lionesses survived the CSB Lady Blazers, 3-2, to bring home their fourth straight tiara to Mendiola.
Coleen Paruan notched the first victory for CSB at the expense of Beverly Paulma in a five-set thriller, 6-11, 11-9, 6-11, 12-10, 4-11. Red Lioness Lyr Leyva then bounced back against Kim Lapitan in the second singles match, 11-6, 12-10, 12-10.
San Beda’s duo Angel Sanchez and Abhie Nuevo completed a come-from-behind victory after losing the first set to Thelly Jungco and Bernice Supelana, 9-11, 11-9, 11-8, 11-4.
CSB’s Lapitan forced a deciding match after defeating Paulma, 8-11, 7-11, 12-10, 10-12. Leyva then dispatched Paruan in the last singles match, 11-7, 7-11, 11-9, 11-3.
The Emilio Aguinaldo College (EAC) Lady Generals finished second, followed by the CSB Lady Blazers and the Arellano Lady Chiefs.
