After a long wait, England-based ultra-luxe carmaker Bentley finally unboxed its widely anticipated, first-ever sport utility vehicle (SUV), the Bentayga. Following a formal unveiling at the Frankfurt Motorshow last September, the new Bentley was more thoroughly introduced to dealers through a global retailer conference in California early this year. Participants were treated to dynamic day drive that gave them a better appreciation of the SUV’s real-world abilities – even where a paved road wasn’t present. So-called “incubator sessions” more thoroughly discussed product features, along with target-market assessment and identification.
The vehicle is named after the Rogue Bentayga – a rugged peak in subtropical Gran Canaria under the control of Spain. Designers and engineers were also inspired by Taiga, the world’s largest transcontinental snow forest and terrestrial biome spanning continents and located throughout the northern latitude.
Bentley Motors Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Wolfgang Dürheimer said that “Bentayga is a name that reflects what we know our SUV will do better than any other car in the world – combine the best automotive luxury with outstanding performance to take the Bentley experience to new environments.”
It starts with an immensely powerful, all-new, turbocharged 6.0-liter W12 TSI engine. Bentley asserts this is the most technically advanced engine of its class – delivering “the most power, torque, and economy.” Indeed, it promises 608 horsepower and an incredible 900 Newton-meters. The numbers translate to standstill to 100 kilometers per hours’ time of four seconds, and a mind-numbing 301-kph top speed. If you’re so inclined, the Bentley boasts towing capacity in excess of 7,000 pounds. Without a doubt, the Bentayga is the world’s most powerful and fastest SUV.
Since the Bentayga comes from a highly rarefied stable, it wields twin values of power and pomp aplenty. Within the vehicle are accoutrements and appointments fit for royalty and heads of state. It’s about meeting needs before passengers ever think of them.
Only the finest materials go into Bentayga inside and out – from hand-crafted wood and leather, to glass (not plastic) to protect the gauges and instrumentation. Attention to detail is second to none, setting standards for both luxury and precision. Bentley cites “meticulous tolerances between the exquisite veneered wood and metal elements.” In a review, Car and Driver lauded details such as “speaker grilles designed to mimic tweed,” and an options list to “absurd lengths and heights.” The two individual rear seats adjust in 18 ways, and feature massage and ventilation functions, plus footrests.
Even the new-generation W12 engine is handcrafted – testament to the incredible skill of Bentley craftsmen. Most of the Bentayga’s unibody is wrought in aluminum, and the body-side is the largest single aluminum stamping in the automotive industry. The generous use of the alloy enables the vehicle to save an excess of 200 kilograms.
This SUV embodies iconic Bentley performance – regardless of climate or terrain. Riding on user-adjustable airsprings that conspire with variable damping, the Bentayga gives occupants unequaled comfort without the jarring and rolling. The Bentley Dynamic ride is the first-ever electric active roll technology to instantly counteract lateral rolling forces when cornering. This also ensures maximum tire contact for exceptional cabin stability, ride comfort and exceptional handling.
Soon enough, you run out of superlatives. Fastest, most powerful, most luxurious, and most exclusive. Surely, in the Bentayga, SUV might as well stand for “supremely unequaled vehicle.”
