BFAR BARES MEASURES TO ENHANCE FISHERY PRODUCTION IN E. VISAYAS

0

MEASURES that will enhance the fishery production in Eastern Visayas are now available, according to the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) here, following a report of the National Statistical Coordination Board that the growth of the sector slowed down to negative 6.3 percent last year from negative 4.1 percent in 2011. The National Economic and Development Authority in its statement on the slow fishery performance cited as factors for the decreased production of commercial, municipal and aquaculture the depleted fishing ground, higher prices of fuel, weather disturbances and unloading of fish catch outside the region. BFAR 8 regional director Juan Albaladejo, meanwhile, attributed the low production to the presence of illegal fishing and the need to be more aggressive in captive fisheries.
