ILOILO CITY: A total of 110 fishermen along the coasts and riverbanks here were awarded with fishing gears by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) upon request of the city agriculturist office. City agriculturist Romulo Pangantihon said the livelihood assistance consisted of 40 units of 5.5HP motors for fishing boats and 70 units of fishing nets. Of the 2,000 fisherfolk registered with the BFAR, only 110 availed of the assistance and came from the villages of San Jose in Molo; Santo Nino Sur, Santo Nino Norte, Calaparan and Calumpang in Arevalo district; Bitoon in Jaro district; and Ingore, Hinactacan and Barrio Obrero in La Paz district. Meanwhile, Edna Janeo of the BFAR said the agency is issuing a national ID system based on fisherfolk registration that matches with their 4Ps registration, with assistance for fishing gears worth P5,000 and P10,000 calamity insurance.
