BFAR releases ornamental fish

APARRI, Cagayan: The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resource (BFAR) Region 02 has released about 235 pieces of confiscated aquarium and ornamental fish to the Palaui Marine Protected Area (PMPA) in Santa Ana town. Lawyer Samuel Agaloos, Chief of the Fisheries Resource Management, Regulatory and Law Enforcement Division said the confiscated aquarium fish of 28 species were earlier found to be contaminated with traces of sodium cyanide in the samples submitted for analysis before issuance of shipping documentation and a transport permit. The BFAR said the use of cyanide in fishing is known to cause coral destruction and is toxic to the marine environment and the fisherfolk involved.
