Carlo Biado and Warren Kiamco survived upset hungry Vietnameser Do Huang Quan and Nguyen Anh Tuan, 9-6, to pocket the gold medal in men’s 9-ball doubles of th 2015 Southeast Asian Games billiards at Hall 4 of the Sports Hub in Singapore.
The final score may look lopsided but the Filipino pair actually had to dig deep in their bag of skills and thanked the Vietnamese for their unforced miscues.
The Filipinos went up, 2-0, but Biado missed sinking the No. 3 ball to the side pocket and gave the Vietnamese the chance to clean up and threaten at 2-1 and level at 2-2.
But Biado made up for that miscue and pocketed No. 5 off the break for the fifth rack which they took for a 3-2 lead. The Vietnamese, however, were stubborn. They took rack No. 6 to tie the match anew at 3-3.
The seventh rack was a complicated battle of safety shots which the Filipinos won but the Vietnamese fought back with a 1-9 combination in the 10th rack for a 6-4 count.
After Kiamco sank Nos. 1, 4 and 5 on the break, Biado fouled the No. 2 ball giving Vietnam the opportunity to threaten at 6-5.
The Vietnamese scratched and gave the Philippines a 7-5 edge, only to walk the tightrope anew after a dry break by Viado, 7-6.
Until lady luck turned her back on the Vietnamese, who missed the No. 1 ball, giving the table back to the Filipino pair, when went on to erect 8-6 lead and grab the gold medal Kiamco fashioned out by sinking a difficult long shot at No. 4 to the corner.
