NAGA CITY: A civic group here started to collect more than five thousand cc of blood that will be needed should the feared Big One earthquake hit Metro Manila. Nathan Sergio, a director of the Philippine National Red Cross (PNRC) Camarines Sur chapter, explained that the absence of a blood program prompted them to form the Bicol For Metro Manila (B4MM) initiative. He said the project involves collection of seven mass blood donation events immediately after the earthquake where they expect to gather at least 5,700 blood units to be sent to PNRC national headquarters and the Department of Health (DOH) Blood Center. He expressed hope that the PNRC and DOH will support the B4MM initiative by providing for the cost of blood bags, serology and blood testing, since their local chapter’s funds are already programmed for other projects. The Metropolitan Manila Earthquake Impact Reduction Study showed the Big One is expected to have a magnitude of 7.2 and may claim over 34,000 people and injure about 100,000.
