• Bicol PNP beefs up force for PeÑafrancia feast

NAGA CITY: The Philippine National Police (PNP) in Bicol has formed the Peace and Order Task Force for the Peñafrancia Festival 2016 to serve as frontliner in security operations within the city and adjacent municipalities in Camarines Sur to preempt plans of terrorists and other threat groups. The threat of terrorist attack during the celebration first surfaced and circulated in the social media from alleged intelligence reports. The reports said a certain Harit, an alleged member of the Abu Sayyaf Group, arrived here on Tuesday. Camarines Sur Police Provincial Director Wilfredo Pornillo, however, said the overall security is under the Naga City police with government security agencies in support. He also ordered the deployment of 500 more policemen. Bicol’s biggest religious festival begins on September 9 with the traditional traslacion (procession) when the image of the Virgin of Peñafrancia is transferred from her home at the Basilica to the Metropolitan Cathedral, borne by largely all-male participants and devotees.
