ILOILO CITY: Big companies are starting to take a look at the potentials of the island province of Guimaras after an energy firm succeeded in putting up a wind energy facility here.
The wind farm is operated by Trans Asia Corporation and produces 27 megawatts of energy.
Gov. Samuel Gumarin of Guimaras said initially four companies have made inquiries at his office on possible investments and business locations for mostly agri-tourism projects in the island. The governor said he welcomes the interest shown by big business toward the Guimaras.
Those that have made inquiries at the governor’s office are businessmen Henry Chuesuy who has a hotel chain in Boracay Island, Felix Tiu of Centennial Resort Hotel in Iloilo City, Severino Lim of the posh Anhawan Resort in Oton, Iloilo, and San Miguel Corporation.
The island has also its share of white sand beaches, coves and adventure areas for hiking and biking. It currently 1,300 hotel rooms which are not enough for the influx of tourists, especially during the summer season.
To help develop the tourism potential of the island, Gumarin said Rep. Rahman Nava is allocating P1.2 billion for infrastructure projects until 2016.
However, the proposed bridge connecting Iloilo to Guimaras was sidelined because of the One Negros proposal of officials in Negros. Gumarin said the proposed bridge will connect Taminla, Leganes to Buenavista, Guimaras as a gateway to Negros island from Guimaras.
