• Bilibid guards end hunger strike; ‘Oplan Galugad’ continues

HAVING no response from the government, fuming guards of the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) ended their hunger strike nearly two weeks after calling for the modernization of the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor). Protest leaders Chito Patingo and Alvin Faeldo said they ended their strike as their leave credits are over. Some 500 inmates also held rally at minimum security compound since Feb. 2, asking to “upgrade prison facilities, professionalize and restructure the Bureau, and increase the salary and benefits of its personnel.” Meanwhile, the 18th round of “Oplan Galugad” at maximum security compound’s quadrant 2 yielded fewer contraband items compared to the past raids, NBP Superintendent Richard Schwarzkopf Jr. said. He added dismantled quarters will be replaced with container vans to decongest the prison complex.
