THE camp of Vice President Jejomar Binay on Monday said the “secret” visit of former Makati City Vice Mayor Ernesto Mercado to the United States raises more doubts because of the reluctance of government agencies to confirm his departure.
United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) interim president Rep. Tobias Tiangco believes there could be other reasons for Mercado’s undisclosed trip.
Tiangco urged the Department of Justice (DOJ) to confirm Mercado’s reported US trip because his “secret” departure has raised all sorts of speculation.
Tiangco noted that the reluctance of the Bureau of Immigration to confirm Mercado’s departure substantiates doubts that the probe on Makati is a “sham” and has been organized against the Binay family.
The lawmaker said while Mercado is free to travel, government officials should be informed as provided for by Witness Protection Program (WPP) rules.
“But what we know is that the WPP must also be informed of his activities papunta man sya sa mga isla niya sa Palawan o sa mga casino sa Las Vegas. Ang tanong namin, nagsabi ba si Mercado sa WPP na siya ay pupuntang Amerika para dalawin ang pamilya nya, o may ibang pakay pa siya?” he asked.
Tiangco said Mercado may have other agenda besides visiting his family.
“Good luck to him,” Cavite Gov. Jonvic Remulla, the Vice President’s spokesperson for political affairs, said when asked if Mercado’s visit to the US is to gather “more evidence” against Binay.
The vice president also had a message to Mercado.
“God bless him,” Binay said.
“Tinatago ng DOJ. Ayaw ipasabi kaya itanong mo sa kanila kung saan siya nagpunta,” he added.
The Vice President also said his camp will be filing a case against his detractors.
“Sobra na. Kailangan na kami ay maghabla na rin. ‘Yun bang pangungutya, paninira so magkikita-kita pa,” he added.
