Out of respect to the more than 40 police commandos killed in what the government claimed was a “mis-encounter” with fighters of the separatist Moro Islamic Liberation Front and its breakaway group Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters on Sunday, Vice President Jejomar Binay is temporarily withholding any statements on allegations of wrongdoing hurled at him and his family by their detractors.
It was learned that six of the members of the Philippine National Police-Special Action Force (PNP-SAF) killed were Binay’s fraternity brothers in Alpha Phi Omega and their deaths are a deep personal loss to him.
The Vice President has conveyed his deepest sympathies to the families of the PNP-SAF members who died in Mamasapano, Maguindanao.
He was supposed to hold a news conference on Wednesday but canceled it in deference to the fallen policemen.
On Monday, the Senate blue ribbon committee cited in contempt the Vice President’s son, Makati City Mayor Jejomar Erwin Binay Jr., and five other Makati City officials for their refusal to attend hearings on the allegedly overpriced Makati City Hall Building 2.
Mayor Binay has been requesting the Senate to provide him and the other Makati City officials advance copies of questions to be asked by the senators, in keeping with Senate rules and the rights of those being summoned to the hearings.
A petition was filed by his lawyer on October 29 last year but the Senate blue ribbon committee is yet to act on it.
Besides Binay, also cited in contempt were Eduviges ‘Ebeng’ Baloloy, Marjorie de Veyra, lawyer Eleno Mendoza, engineer Line dela Pena and Bernadette Portollano.
The mayor attended a hearing last year only to be humiliated and embarrassed by senators said to be out to discredit the Vice President and his family to derail his plan to run for the presidency in the 2016 elections.
He vowed to stand against what he described as abuse of authority by some senators.
The mayor said he will allow himself to be detained at the Senate in case the chamber’s leadership orders his arrest for ignoring the hearings.
