Top Filipino players will see action in the Bingo Bonanza Badminton National Open slated on October 11 to 18 at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex in Manila and Glorietta 5 Atrium in Makati City.
This year’s edition of the meet has a pool prize of P1.5 million.
“This is one of the biggest badminton tournaments,” said lawyer Jackie Cruz of the Philippine Badminton Association (PBA) in the weekly Philippine Sports Writers Association forum at Shakey’s Malate.
“Dito namin nakikita ‘yung mga bata na kailangan namin sa team [This is where we scout future players for the national team],” Cruz added.
Bingo Bonanza Badminton Open is one of the five tournaments that the PBA uses in determining the ranking of badminton players in the country.
Winners in the tournament will get ranking points from PBA, which are needed to become a member of the national team.
Mark Alcala and Gelita Castilo, last year singles champions, will face tough opposition when they defend their titles this year.
The other prominent players competing are R-Jay Omilla, Kenneth Monterubio, Kevin Cudiamat, Paul Vivas, Peter Magnaye, Sarah Barredo, Airah Albo, Christine Inlayo and Malvinne Alcala.
Registration is ongoing until September 30. For details, visit www.bingob.com/nationalopentournament or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
